Through a labour intensive process of de-construction and re-construction, rubber inner tubes are hand stitched together to form a large tactile rubber sculpture. Like a decorative cushion, the work is trimmed with blue gingham ribbon, suggesting femininity and domesticity, in contrast with the more masculine and industrial rubber material. Traditional craft techniques are often employed to create sculptures and fabric works that combine everyday items with soft or decorative fabrics. Rubbermaid is tinged with humour and sexual innuendo and the artist’s intent is to be both playful and provocative.
