My response to the theme 'Redundant' explores the idea of excess or extravagance in the context of our current economic crisis. I have considered the intended function of the unfinished Anglo Irish Bank building in Dublin's docklands, a stable money lending institution, and what now remains, a symbol of economic excessiveness in our society, a skeletal reminder of the greed and absurdity of a nation's government...a folly. Some structures are considered follies because although they are in the form of useful buildings, they are plainly constructions of extreme and intentional impracticality. The work explores a narrative between practical intentionality and fantasy taking the form of a folly.
